Changing the Dialogue

By Michael Opitz

Illegal immigration and the negative impact it is having on all U.S. communities across this nation is well known. Our focus continues to attempt to understand the scope of the problem, helping to motivate elected officials to enforce the laws, and closing loop holes that encourage illegal immigration into the U.S.

These illegal immigrants are citizens of other countries, many of which are corrupt. Mexico is a good example of massive government corruption and payoffs to the Drug Cartels, so its citizens can't earn a good living. Mexico has tremendous natural resources, but average citizen does not benefit. The current U.S. Administration wanted regime change in Iraq and wants regime change in Iran. Perhaps we, as citizens, should demand regime change in Mexico and other South American countries because many of their citizens are now economic refugees living illegally in America, and that is greater immediate negative effect on our society than Iraq and Iran.Where is the compassion in helping our neighbor countries achieve a standard of living, so their citizens can remain at home with their families and enjoy their own culture on big screen TV?

Or perhaps another answer is to insist that all South American countries including Mexico grant citizenship to all U.S. Citizens with full rights to run for office, voting rights, the right to own property and open business in Mexico (under NAFTA, U.S. companies cannot retain full ownership in their own company much as it is in China.) Many Americans would like to be able to open business, own property and vote in Mexico and other South American countries.

I think we could solve this problem quickly, and U.S. Citizens’ rights in Mexico and other countries should be part of any immigration reform legislation. It could become a great place to retire, buy land to grow corn for fuel, and our social security checks would have greater purchasing power. We might be able to turn Mexico into another Texas, Arizona, New Mexico or even Iowa. Since President Bush wants to enact a North American Union, Mexico should show their good faith by giving all U.S. citizens the full constitutional rights of citizens born in Mexico. Fair is fair; or are we dealing with a stacked deck? Voting rights in Mexico for U.S citizens is reasonable demand. We are told voting rights in the U.S. is the objective of Mexican and others living illegally in the U.S. But as a difference, we bring money, education, skills, investment capital, and an understanding of democratic reforms as well as our dislike of corruption that is Mexico.

Mexico needs U.S. citizens with full equal rights to bring prosperity to their under developed country. We know about equal rights, and we can help ... kinda like a Peace Core project, but we begin to run the show...democratically of course. And Mexico will be expected to teach English in their schools to our children and provide free medical care as well to those Americans who may be short on cash. Remember Americans currently living legally in Mexico have no legal rights under the Mexican Constitution. This is unacceptable! Americans can make Mexico a better place to live. We want to help and be good neighbors. Mexico needs to change their laws, so we can have a good cultural exchange. I will support Rudy Giuliani for Mayor of Mexico City. Wouldn't that make an excellent bumper sticker? After all, he declared New York to be a "Sanctuary City." He could initiate the same program in Mexico City for illegal Americans with property and banking rights as well, and that would significantly help bridge our cultural differences.

This is a start in changing the dialog, and we need your thoughts ... letters to the editor will help as well. Let President Bush know that you are on his team to save Mexico, and we need massive distribution of Mexican Green Cards with full rights and benefits.
